Fredericksburg toy store raises a Ruckus

FREDERICKSBURG — Fredericksburg’s Jabberwocky has become one of the nation’s top retailers of a popular family game called Ruckus, according to Dan Levy, president of Funstreet Inc.

“Jabberwocky is in the top 3 percent of the 1,500 stores selling Ruckus nationwide, including 40 Toys ‘R’ Us and 83 Target stores,” said Levy, the game’s creator and manufacturer. “Given that Jabberwocky is a small mom-and-pop store, it really got me wondering what they’ve been doing to make that happen.”

Mona Albertine, owner of Jabberwocky, shed some light on how the store and staff work their magic.

“Well, we certainly try to be more intimate than the big stores, to offer toys and games you won’t necessarily find there and to really know what we have on the shelf,” said Albertine. “Once we find something we like, like Ruckus, we become a little bit like missionaries, spreading the word to anyone who will listen or comes to us asking for help finding something good for the family to play with.”

The Ruckus Card Game, for two to five players ages 5 to adult, retails for $9.99.
