STAFFORD — The Orange County Planning Commission voted 5-4 late last week, backing a proposal from Walmart that seeks to build a supercenter near a Civil War battlefield in Orange.
The vote, which took place June 25, is a recommendation to the Orange County Board of Supervisors, which will now consider the request.
Meanwhile, area preservationists have been steadfast in their opposition regarding the proposal to build the 138,000-square-foot store on 52 acres. There would also be just over 4,700 square feet devoted to an outdoor garden center, according to the plan.
If approved, the store is planned for just north of the intersection of U.S. 3 and 20, across U.S. 3 from the Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park.
