ABC commemorates 75 years of service
This year, the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control turns 75. The agency was formed in 1934 after Virginians overwhelmingly voted for ratification of the 21st Amendment, calling for a repeal of prohibition and the implementation of a liquor control plan. ABC feels that its three-pronged mission of “control, service and revenue” addresses the unique challenges inherent in the alcohol beverage industry.
“We’ve come a long way from our early days of behind-the-counter liquor sales and chasing moonshiners,” ABC Board Chair Pamela O’Berry Evans said. “Seventy-five years in, we are a modern, innovative agency accountable to the citizens of the Commonwealth and beyond.”
