Comcast expands its services
STAFFORD — Comcast has expanded its HD lineup for customers in Stafford County with the addition of 38 new HD networks. Bravo HD, CMT HD, Hallmark HD, Investigation Discovery HD, Nickelodeon HD and The Weather Channel HD are just a few of the popular networks joining Comcast’s growing HD lineup for area customers. Comcast plans to launch more HD networks in 2011. The HD network additions are made possible by Comcast’s “World of More” digital service enhancement, which has been rolling out neighborhood by neighborhood across the country and recently arrived in Stafford.
White Oak Rescue Squad names new officers
WHITE OAK — At the June monthly business meeting the White Oak Volunteer Rescue Squad held elections for officers for 2011 - 2012. The new officers were installed into office on Saturday by Daniel M. Chichester Commonwealth’s Attorney for Stafford County at the Annual White Oak Volunteer Rescue Squad Banquet.
The new Administrative Officers are: President Rocco Schroeder, Vice President Curt Andrich, Secretary Amanda Long, Treasurer Nina Brown, Public Information Officer Wayne George and Board of Trustee Betty Sullivan.
The new Operational Officers are: Rescue Chief Chrissy Olson, 1st Lieutenant – Operations Mike Wright, 2nd Lieutenant – Training Lindsay Cropp, 2nd Lieutenant – Equipment George Shepard. The new Vehicle Sergeants are: Response Vehicle: Ron Wilson, Vehicle 7-1: Nina Brown, Vehicle 7-3: Wayne George.
The President’s Award for 2010 – 2011 went to: Nina Brown. The Chief’s Award for 2010 – 2011 went to: Curt Andrich. The EMS Member for 2010 – 2011 went to: Tina Bennett. And after 10 years of dedicated service Ron Wilson has become the newest Life Member of White Oak Rescue Squad. You too can make a difference. Consider volunteering.
Field hockey camp to be held
SPOTSYLVANIA — Academy International, in association with Typhoon Elite Field Hockey, will be hosting a week long field hockey camp at Chancellor High School July 25-29. Athlete holds to benefit children
STAFFORD — Baltimore Ravens rookie Torrey Smith held a benefit basketball game at Stafford High School on June 10 to benefit underprivileged athletes and to allow them to gain easier access to athletic gear.
The event raised about $6,500, according to the Stafford County School Board.
It also kicked off Smith’s Torrey Smith Foundation.
Smith said on YouTube that he was once a young athlete just like those in the Stafford community, some of whom may not have easy access to athletic gear.
The benefit game is planned to be an annual event.
Smith is a Stafford High School graduate and was recently drafted from the Maryland Terrapins.
Fort A.P. Hill celebrates birthday
CAROLINE COUNTY — Fort A.P. Hill in Caroline County turned 70 years old on Saturday. Among events celebrating the birthday included a parade in Bowling Green.
Soap box derby held in Fredericksburg
FREDERICKSBURG — The 15th Annual Rappahannock Regional Soapbox Derby was held Saturday in cars that children made from kits. Some Fredericksburg streets were blocked off to allow for the race, sponsored by the Free Lance-Star.
