Country Connection: Take care with celebrity endorsements

As you are no doubt aware, the presidential election is only weeks away. Most of us have already decided which deserving candidate will receive our vote, however for those still on the fence, there is an endless line of celebrities willing to give their opinion.

From famous actors to the “who’s that guy?” they are all standing by. Country music stars are no exception. We all remember the Dixie Chicks. Right now, they’re sitting at home staring at their piles of Grammy’s and Platinum records, wondering why they can’t get a song on the radio. If only they had not chimed in with their educated opinions of world politics and foreign policy they might actually still be relevant.

Last Friday the Bellamy Brothers and Aaron Tippin were in Cincinnati to perform at a Republican rally for Sarah Palin. The country stars were heard endorsing the Alaskan Governor’s quest to be the first female President of the Senate. That’s one of the few responsibilities of the nation’s second in command.

Artists from all walks of life have spoken up about their political beliefs. They have the ability to make a much more powerful appeal than those in politics. This is sometimes a good thing. It’s been documented that Brad Pitt and Harry Connick Jr. have done more for the victims of Hurricane Katrina than the Louisiana State Legislature.

As you watch the various awards shows, keep in mind that many of those on stage are no more informed about world politics than you are. While you are at a stage show, whether it’s Nissan Pavilion, The Patriot Center, or Old Mill Park, remember you’re listening to a country musician — not a senator.

I’m not suggesting you should ignore their opinions, but maybe they are better served with a grain or two of salt. This may be the most important election of several generations. Your vote matters, whether you believe it or not. Make sure your not influenced by someone who just happens to be the one behind the microphone. Believe me you don’t have to be certified in anything to get these jobs.

Just certifiable.
