Seventy-fifth anniversary of Williamsburg Capital Buildings
WILLIAMSBURG — Two of Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area exhibition sites, the Capitol Building and the Governor’s Palace, will celebrate their 75th anniversaries in 2009. To celebrate these milestones, special focus tours of the Capitol and Governor’s Palace tell the story of how the two sites have evolved. For more information, call 1-800-HISTORY.

Williamsburg “Under the Redcoat” Weekend
WILLIAMSBURG — Hundreds of British Army re-enactors will recreate the 1781 Occupation of Williamsburg and subject the citizens of 1781 to martial law. A Colonial Williamsburg admission ticket provides access to enjoy this program and more. For more information, call 1-800-HISTORY.

Adopt a Great Dane
The Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League is one of the largest breed specific rescues, helping find homes for abandoned or homeless Great Danes. On June 27, at the Stafford PetCo (309 Worth Ave), MAGDRL will hold a Meet & Greet from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to invite people to come out and adopt a Great Dane. Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and assist in adoptions.

Historic Occoquan Tours
Founded in 1734, as a trading post, this tiny Virginia hamlet hugs the banks of the Occoquan River providing a picturesque setting for visitors to escape mall and city shopping. Special historical tours, with the occasional ghost, are being scheduled for weekends this summer, beginning this month. Call (703) 494-6983 or (571) 334-7357.

River Easement Hike and Float
From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Fredericksburg's River Steward, Lee Sillitoe, will guide visitors through a section of the city's riparian land holdings and discuss the importance of conservation easements and streamside buffer zones. We will canoe from Mott's Run Landing, and then hike to England Run Falls. Bring a bag lunch. The minimum age of participants should be 8 years. $15 individual or $45 family (up to four). Call the Friends of the Rappahannock office at (540) 373-3448 Mon.-Fri. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. to make reservations.

Rappahannock Canal Cleanup
The Friends of the Rappahannock Pathways Committee will clean up the Rappahannock Canal. For more information, please email jeffjonesuu@aol.com.

StageDoor presentation of ‘Rumors’
Stage Door Productions will begin its 2009-10 season with “Rumors,” a comedic offering by playwright Neil Simon. Performances will be held June 26 and 27 at 8 p.m. and June 28 at 2 p.m. in the Massaponax High School auditorium at U.S. 1 and 607 (Guinea Station Road). First Fridays concert series
The Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center is announcing the free public concert series’ third season. The free concert features the elegant and stylish folk music duo Laurie Rose Griffith and Peter Mealy from 7 to 10 p.m. Family-friendly entertainment will be offered in the Square from 7 to 8:30 p.m. From 5 to 8 p.m., museum admission will be free, as well.

Saturday, July 4

Fireworks at Mount Vernon
Historic Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, will salute our first commander-in-chief with a display of daytime fireworks during its annual Independence Day event. They will be fired during the finale of the National Concert Band of America’s performance. Visit MountVernon.org for details, pricing and event information.

Opening reception at the Gallery

Nighttime Canoe Float
Nighttime is when the river comes alive! Join the Friends of the Rappahannock and guides Bob Sargeant and Brian Gudmundsson for an enjoyable float in the dark from 7:30 to 10 p.m. and hopefully spot some wildlife. The group will meet at the Fredericksburg City Dock. Call the office at (540) 373-3448.

Sunday, July 12

Meet the Artist Reception
Guests are invited to come to the Loft Gallery in Occoquan to meet Karin Sebolka from 1 to 4 p.m. Sebolka is an award-winning artist known internationally for her “powerful yet sensitive” floral and landscape watercolors.
