Skynyrd to play Fredericksburg

Iconic rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd will kick off the Celebrate Virginia Live summer concert series Friday in Fredericksburg, and their Southern-fried rock 'n' roll is helping a good cause.
Between now and July 8, for each concert series ticket sold through the Germanna Community College website, CVL will donate $2 to the school's educational foundation. (Click on the "Germanna Concerts" link at germanna.edu.)
Foundation President Bruce Davis and his wife, Sandy, will match the $2 donation, GCC spokesman Mike Zitz said.
The Skynyrd concert starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Jobs.com Pavilion - behind Central Park Shopping Center - at 503 Gordon W. Shelton Blvd. Homegrown is the opening act.
General admission is $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
Adored and copied by countless cover bands, Lynyrd Skynyrd is best known for chart-topping songs "Sweet Home Alabama," "Free Bird" and "Saturday Night Special."
Other acts scheduled to perform this summer include: country star Travis Tritt, arena band 38 Special, country rocker Gary Allan, and Darius Rucker, former frontman of Hootie and the Blowfish.
This year, Germanna's educational foundation is providing more than $110,000 in scholarships to students attending the school's campuses in Culpeper, Locust Grove and Fredericksburg.
"Germanna fills the local need for nurses, dental hygienists, daycare workers, auto mechanics - the list goes on and on," Bruce Davis said. "We hope everyone can attend the concerts, and help Germanna students achieve their goals and realize their dreams."
