Bone marrow drive to be held
STAFFORD — A bone marrow drive will be held June 20 at Mount Ararat Baptist Church. The focus of this effort is 5-year-old Sydney Gavan, of Columbiaville, Mich. She has been diagnosed with Biphenotypic Acute Leukemia, a rare form of cancer.
Thousands of of patients with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases depend on the Be The Match Registry for a life-saving marrow match. The Be The Match Marrowthon aims to bring 46,000 new members to a national registry during June 8-22.
Joining the registry includes filling out a short health questionnaire and swabbing the inside of the cheek with a cotton swab. Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 60 and be in general good health.
Sydney, who is in need of a transplant, has not yet found a match. During the Marrow Drive the registration fee of $52 is waived for the first 65 people. Registration is free for all active-duty military members and their dependants & DoD civilians.
Susan’s Fun Foods will donate up to 250 snow cones to any business, church, or family event that has the most employees/members who come out to register or donate at the drive. Susan’s will also be giving away a free 8 oz snow cone to anyone who registers or donates at the drive.
The registry drive will be held from 10am to 4pm at the church, located at Toluca Road in Stafford. For more information, contact Lisa Wick at (540) 318-5743 or Marilyn Neve (540) 295-5575.
