FREDERICKSBURG — Heather Burgess took the lead in the first heat in the Masters Division. And she never lost her edge as she rolled to victory in the 2009 Soapbox Derby last weekend.

In the first heat she beat Jonathan Ringold, then rolled past Aaron Ruchala in the second.

Challenged for the title by Heather Ciccone in the third tier, 16-year-old Burgess rolled to victory.

Forty-eight Stafford racers participated in the derby. Eighteen rode in the Stock Division, 26 drove Super Stock, and four drove in Masters.

First time racer, 9-year-old Christopher Klopp of King George rode to victory in the Stock Division while Travis Staples, 15, of Spotsylvania, took the title in Super Stock.

The race was sponsored by the Free Lance-Star.
