Dear Emily: I am having a huge Fourth of July bash at my house for my friends, family and co-workers. As such, I want to display the American Flag in front of my house. Aren’t there specific rules about how to display the flag properly? I don’t want to offend anyone.
— Patriotic Concerns
Dear Patriotic Concerns: Yes, there are rules you should follow, and good for you for taking the time to ask and to handle the flag respectfully. Check out http://www.usflag.org/ for official rules. You’ll learn things like: the flag should not be displayed in inclement weather, except when it is an all-weather flag. Also, when displaying the flag staff projecting horizontally or at an angle from the window sill, the union of the flag should be placed at the peak of the staff.
Dear Emily: I am three months pregnant and worried about gaining too much weight. I know that sounds horrible, but I already have one child and I was never able to lose all the weight I gained with her. My doctor tells me I shouldn’t be exercising, but I’ve heard other people say that’s not true — some exercise is supposed to be ok, right? — Worried in White Oak
Dear Worried in White Oak: Always listen to your doctors, as they know your situation best. If, however, you feel your doctor isn’t providing you with accurate information, go out and find one who you feel is more responsive to your needs. You’re right that in some cases exercise is considered safe, and even beneficial, during pregnancy. But not knowing anything about your pregnancy (for example, is this a high-risk pregnancy?), I certainly can’t tell you if exercise is right for you.
