Prepare for 3-D TV hype
Television in 3-D is the next big thing, and just around the corner. The only thing is, it's been just around the corner for the last decade, if not more.
But with an astounding amount of buzz in the electronics world, and the movie "Avatar" in 3-D breaking box office records, a lot of TV companies and some cable companies are pushing hard for you to buy into 3-D in your living room.
Soon, they claim, we'll all be watching Jack Bauer wale on a bad guy with realistic blood and sweat flying in our laps.
You'll still need to wear funny 3-D glasses, but if things work out, this summer, Sony could have a 40-inch version for $1,600, and a 55-inch version for $2,800, with new 3-dimensional Blu-ray players possibly around the $500 range. Other television makers are coming as well.
DirecTV announced plans for three 3-D channels this June, focused on pay-per-view movies, documentaries and shows. No word on pricing yet from the company.
Verizon said their network could easily handle new channels, but has no plans to launch any just for 3-D.
