Paved-over graves not forgotten

» 0 Comments | Post a Comment

STAFFORD — In the early 1900s, Charles Roberson died and was buried near his wife, Mary Roberson.

When it was recently discovered, through the help of the Stafford County Cemetery Committee, that their graves were paved over by a new tenant, county officials looked into the issue.

Access Eye Centers had reportedly expanded its parking lot, located off U.S. 1 near Forbes Street.

Stafford County Supervisor Paul Milde, R-Aquia, said the owner claims not to have known about the graves. Milde said he felt the owner should have known the graves were there, but at the same time, cannot imagine anyone would do such a thing on purpose.

“We’re working as quickly as possible to restore the dignity to the Robersons,” Milde said. “The whole event is unfortunate.”
