Funds raised for American Cancer Society

STAFFORD — Kloke Mayflower and a local radio team banded together last week to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

They did so to honor Andy Foss and her husband Gary Foss, founders of Fredericksburg Christian School. Andy Foss was diagnosed with cancer in 2008.

Positive Hits 89.9 and 90.5, along with Kloke Mayflower, planned to launch the Mayflower hot-air balloon April 3 from the high school campus, with one radio personality and one school administrator riding in the balloon. The launch event was to be broadcast live.

The Mayflower balloon is nearly nine stories tall and more than 55 feet wide. It is capable of lifting 1,650 pounds and can fly to altitudes of up to 20,000 feet.

But instead, Kloke Mayflower gave a demonstration on the principles of flight. The balloon was not able to launch, due to inclement weather. The event was open to the public, with contributions welcome, according to a press release.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to honor the Fosses and to raise awareness of cancer. …” said Greg Calvert, vice president of Kloke Mayflower.

Throughout the week, contributions for the American Cancer Society were either hand-delivered at predetermined locations or made online at positivehits.org. The campaign ended April 3.

Thirty years ago, the Fosses established Fredericksburg Christian School at First Christian Church with just 30 students and four teachers.
