Reader points out who’s in charge

In response to [Sun columnist] Harvey Gold's viewpoint, "Install 'parental control' in adults", I've got to say, we're in a lot of trouble! It's easy to wonder why a high school boy would pose as a female, take pictures of himself, post them on the Internet and solicit sex. All you have to do is look at the [stuff] that’s on the TV and it's a no-brainer as to why this is happening.

We are all born with inherent evil. Being good is a learned behavior, and in my opinion, parents are not teaching their children the difference between right and wrong anymore. They’re letting the TV and teachers be the baby-sitters. Teaching good moral behavior starts at a very early age, and it must start at home. We all see it, the lack of respect for themselves and others that many young people have. Between cell phones, texting, blackberries and e-mail, whatever happened to talking to someone face to face? There's really only one thing to remember — the adults are in charge!

PETA member expresses view

Labrador retrievers — America's most popular dog — are prone to bone disease, hemophilia, and retinal degeneration, and nearly 60 percent of golden retrievers suffer from hip dysplasia. The American Kennel Club’s standards require many breeds to endure painful, unnecessary mutilations, including having their ears and tails cut off. And while pampered pooches prance around the ring at Westminster, tens of thousands of friendly, lovable dogs — about 25 percent of them “purebred” — await their fates at animal shelters across the country. Many will be euthanized, simply because there aren’t enough homes for them. The AKC must share the blame for this, because it encourages breeders to keep cranking out puppies, who steal homes from shelter dogs. Please, say “no” to breedism: Adopt homeless dogs from shelters or rescue groups instead of buying them from breeders. To learn more, visit HelpingAnimals.com.

Reader enjoys Valentine’s Day tips

Valentine's Day is a special day for anyone and especially for couples in love of all ages. Living in Stafford County it is nice to know that there are so many places to dine in or dine out in and around Washington, DC. With the economy, I chose to dine in with candles as the centerpiece of our dinner table. And, with all the health benefits that dark chocolate has to offer, the recipe mentioned in the Stafford County Sun sounds delicious and scrumptious and best of all it's an easy and fast recipe! Now, I can make my own little kisses and give one to my best friend — my husband. Thanks for the cooking smarts that were put to labor with love!
