STAFFORD — R. Paul Ortiz, Independent candidate for Aquia supervisor, said this week that he will voluntarily adopt campaign finance reforms beyond that required by Virginia election law. In addition, Ortiz said he challenges candidates Irene Egan and incumbent Supervisor Paul Milde to follow suit.
Oritz said in a released statement he fears that oftentimes elected officials favor special interests that bankroll their campaigns. All citizens have the right to have their voices heard, he noted, and said he believes transparent campaign finance reporting may make this possible.
Ortiz pledged to implement “clean money” reforms in his campaign. To do this, he said he intends to report the source of all campaign contributions, decline any campaign contributions from developers, builders, realtors, and land speculators, and make all economic interest statements and campaign finance reports available on his Web site.
