STAFFORD — The Stafford County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to approve a conditional-use permit to allow a cold-weather homeless shelter on King’s Highway in south Stafford.
Supervisors were unanimous in their decision.
The shelter will operate at 750 King’s Highway, in a former Little Falls school building, currently being used for storage. It is now owned by the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board.
The one-story structure, built in 1912, totals just over 3,150 square feet.
The daytime facility, more than double that size, is located near the rear of the facility, and would still operate and co-exist on the site, according to plans.
According to the applicant, Micah Ecumenical Ministries, the shelter will serve the area’s chronic homeless on especially cold nights, and will operate from Nov. 1 to April 15 each year, with the ability to serve approximately 30 to 40 individuals at a time.
The shelter will serve as “overnight accommodations,” and plans to be open from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m., according to current plans submitted to the board.
Micah Ecumenical Ministries is a non-profit, governed by a group of churches. It formed in 2005 and focuses on the needs of the chronic homeless.
The shelter has, up until now, made use of Bragg Hill Family Life Center, turning there for assistance when needed.
