Editorial: Weekend events will do your heart good

For those wishing to lend a hand this weekend and in the weeks coming up, a few special events come to mind.

For instance, a special 3-year-old little boy named Matthew Rose needs a helping hand, and he has many friends looking out for him along the way. One of those friends, Frank McCarty, of Stafford, has chosen him as the beneficiary of this year’s oyster roast, to be held March 7 at McCarty’s White Oak Equipment in Fredericksburg.

Matthew, who lives in Caroline County with his parents Laurie and Donald Rose, has been diagnosed with cancer. The oyster roast will be held from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at 358 Kings Highway, and proceeds will go toward Matthew’s medical bills.

Additionally, Special Olympics Virginia teams are looking for a few fans March 20-21 in Stafford.

If you want to show some community spirit and catch a few games, consider this an opportunity to encourage young athletes that need your support. Having fans in the stands will mean the world to these athletes, and they’re ready, willing and proud to show off the skills they’ve learned. While the economy is certainly affecting just about everyone, there are many ways that people can reach out to help those in need, whether it be to pick and choose those charities and causes that they can afford to support, or whether it’s just to be present at an event where an athlete needs a few kind words. We’re willing to bet that local sports and recreation facilities wouldn’t mind having extra volunteer coaches either.

There’s always a way to be a part of the community and lend a hand.
