Shelters to open during snowstorm

» 0 Comments | Post a Comment

Stafford County will open two shelters at noon Feb. 5, to assist people in need during the snow storm this weekend. The shelters will be at Stafford High School, 33 Stafford Indian Lane, and North Stafford High School, 839 Garrisonville Road. They will be managed by staff from the Red Cross.

As an important part of personal and family emergency planning, realizing the potential need for emergency shelter before a storm can minimize difficult choices and even prove to be a life saving decision. Residents who have experienced many power outages in their homes during weather events, do not have back up heating sources, and especially those with medical equipment that relies on electricity, should consider using one of the identified shelters. Most importantly, individuals should not wait until they have been stranded by snow and ice. The weather could contribute to lengthy response times and other difficulties for public safety personnel in assisting those in need.

Individuals should bring enough items to a shelter to be comfortable for at least 72 hours. These include change of clothing, prescriptions, over-the-counter medication such as Tylenol or Advil, eye glasses, toiletries, and food, snacks and beverages. They should also bring bedding items such as a sheet, blanket and pillow. Pets will not be allowed in the shelters.

The shelters will be open for as long as they are needed.
