Dr. Sharashenidze joins pulmonary and critical care practice

Dr. David Sharashenidze has joined the pulmonary and critical care practice of Drs. Richard Robinson and Mark Clinton. Dr. Sharashenidze is fellowship-trained in pulmonary medicine, critical care and sleep medicine from The George Washington University Medical Center and the Washington Veterans Hospital. Prior to joining Drs. Robinson and Clinton, he served as director of the Critical Care Unit at the Specialty Hospital of Washington at Hadley. Dr. Kriegel opens office in Potomac Center 

Plastic and general surgeon Dr. Andrew Kriegel has opened an office in the Potomac Center, Suite 210. Dr. Kriegel completed his residency in general surgery at Medical University of Ohio and is certified by the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Treakle joins Infectious Disease Associates

Infectious Disease Associates have announced the addition of Dr. Amy Treakle to their practice. Dr. Treakle completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Maryland Medical System. Dr. Treakle also completed a fellowship in infectious disease at The George Washington University - VA Medical Center. New retailer offers “Express Lane” to fresh fashion

Express will open its newest store at Spotsylvania Towne Centre by early October. The new Express will occupy over 7,800 square feet in the north concourse of Towne Centre, near the Food Court and JCPenney. Express is now the sixth largest specialty retailer of women's and men's apparel in the United States, operating more than 550 stores across the United States. Stafford’s Reger Group Recognized as a Top Federal Contractor

(Stafford, VA) –The Reger Group was recently acknowledged by The Federal Times as one of the nation’s top federal contractors. COLLEGE

Kuntz wins Johnson Opportunity Grant at W&L

Michael Kuntz, from Stafford, a senior at Washington and Lee University, has been awarded a Johnson Opportunity Grant to work at the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston, Texas.

Kuntz is a biochemistry major and will spend six weeks this summer observing heart surgeries and conducting medical research. He will also attend teaching conferences to learn about the newest developments in medical care. Kuntz is a graduate of Brooke Point School. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Kuntz of Stafford. W&L's Johnson Opportunity grants are awarded through a competitive process and students receive amounts from $1,000 to $4,500 to provide funds to cover travel, living expenses and other costs associated with a project or summer activity. The grants are funded by a gift to W&L, which also created scholarships and a lecture and symposia series focusing on leadership and two endowed professorships.

Resident receives degree from Shepherd University
Victoria Rae Johnson, of Fredericksburg, was among the 715 students receiving degrees at Shepherd University’s 137th Commencement on May 17.
 

Residents honored at Berklee College of Music Commencement

Cameron Outlaw of Stafford participated in Berklee College of Music's 2010 Commencement held recently in Boston at Boston University's Agganis Arena. Outlaw received a Degree in Professional Music from President of Berklee College of Music, Roger Brown. 

MILITARY

Seaman Parrish graduates Navy basic training

Navy Seaman Anthony A. Parrish, a 2004 graduate of North Stafford High School, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Parrish completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations". This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ''Navy'' flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor.       

Airman Jordan graduates from basic military training

Air Force Airman Tariq S. Jordan graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is the son of Brenda Ghee of Riggs Road, Fredericksburg, Va.

Jordan is a 2009 graduate of North Stafford High School, Stafford, Va. 

Residents named to Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Commandant’s List

The following students were named to the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Commandant’s List.

Alex Luke of Stafford, an Air Force cadet, is a freshman majoring in psychology in the College of Science.

Michael Votruba of Stafford, a civilian track cadet, is a junior majoring in economics in the College of Science.

Brendon Ackermann of Stafford, a Navy cadet, is a freshman majoring in university studies at Virginia Tech.

Nicholas La Pietra of Stafford, a civilian track cadet, is a junior majoring in general engineering in the College of Engineering.

William McWaters of Stafford, a civilian track cadet, is a junior majoring in aerospace engineering in the College of Engineering.

In order to make the list, cadets must earn a 3.0 or greater grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) during the previous semester. For the spring 2010 semester, 395 cadets were selected for the Commandant’s List.

PASTIME

National Night Out at Hampton Oaks

Hampton Oaks National Night Out will be held on Aug. 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Community Center. This year’s theme is “Stafford County: Connected Through Communities.” There will be food, a moon bounce, a safety trivia game, a cakewalk, pool races, and children’s games.  Some of our participants will include safety personnel, McGruff the Crime Dog, PAWs for Reading, and the Eagle Hill Equine Rescue organization.  Please join us for this event and bring your old cell phones for donation. Aikido Non-violent Self Defense

Aikido teaches stretching, postural improvement, and deep breathing to students ages 6 to 12 on Wednesdays, Aug. 4 thru 25 from 5:30 to 6:20 p.m. and for ages 13 and up from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. at the Rowser Building, 1739 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Stafford.  The cost of the class is $58 for Stafford residents/$63 for non-residents.  The deadline is one week prior to class or until full.

TaeKwonDo

 Art Classes

Learn about materials and tools, planning a painting, techniques, color basics, mixing colors, and light and shadow as you use water colors and acrylics.  New ideas will be taught each month.  Classes are divided into the following age groups: ages 5-7, 8-10 and 11-18 years, and are held on Thursday, Friday or Saturday and run weekly for one month.  Times vary depending on day and age.  Dynamic All-Stars

Learn baton twirling, marching, and basic majorette skills and participate in parades and shows.  This is an ongoing program and you may register anytime.  This class is offered for ages 3 and up on Monday nights at the Stafford Gym & Recreation Center, 500 Nelms Circle, Falmouth.  Tiny Tot Twirlers are from 6 to 6:45 p.m. and Juvenile Twirlers from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m.  Stop by a class on a Monday night and talk to the instructor to see which class the child should be placed in.  The cost is $30 per month.

 Basket Weaving

Learn basic weaving techniques, material preparation and storage.  You will be given a supply list at the time of registration.  Classes are from 9 a.m.to 1:30 p.m.  On Aug. 14, we will make a Two Pie Basket and on Aug. 21 we will make a Plaited Quiver Basket; All classes are for ages 16 and up and held at the Rowser Building, 1739 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Stafford.   The cost is $21 for Stafford residents/$26 for non-residents per class.  A supply fee is due to the instructor the first day of class.  The deadline is one week prior or until full.

Rappahannock Big Brother Big Sisters announces waiting list

Rappahannock Big Brothers Big Sisters has 57 children on our waiting list. There is a great need for male African American mentors in the North Stafford area as well as female mentors in the King George area. Big Brothers Big Sisters will be holding a Volunteer Information Session on Aug. 19th at 7 p.m. at the agency at 325A Wallace Street, Fredericksburg, near the Falmouth bridge (behind Wachovia Bank on Route 1).   This session is for adults in our community who would like to learn more about becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister.  Please call us at 371-7444 or email us at info@rbbbs.org to sign up for the informational meeting.

 UMW Board of Visitors names Rector

The University of Mary Washington Board of Visitors has named Daniel K. Steen as rector for the 12-member board and the Honorable Pamela J. White as vice rector. Steen, who succeeds Nanalou Sauder as rector, and White will serve two-year terms in those positions. Patricia Revere will serve her second term as the board’s secretary.

 Jo-Ann prom contest finalists announced

Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, the leading fabric and craft specialty retailer in America, is pleased to announce the finalists in the Own Your Look, Own Your Future prom contest. In January, Jo-Ann challenged students to create a prom garment and accessory for the chance to win $50,000 cash.  Free Health Clinic Registration Is Now Open for D.C. Area Uninsured

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Uninsured D.C. area residents are urged to register now for the upcoming massive free clinic to be held in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 4. Patients should call 1-877-233-5159 to make an appointment. The National Association of Free Clinics (NAFC) will sponsor the free clinic on Aug. 4 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, 801 Mount Vernon Place, N.W.

Stain glass artist Kim Steinmuller Joy and jewelry artist and instructor specializing in Metal Clays, Carol Hamilton are the featured artists for the month of August in building 9 at the Workhouse Art Center in Lorton. The show opens on Aug. 10 and goes through Sept. 5. Come meet the artists and enjoy Second Saturday at the Workhouse on Aug. 14 from 6 to 9 p.m.
