STAFFORD — The Stafford County Airport Authority discussed at its monthly meeting Tuesday how to improve the soil quality at the airport.
They discussed the pros and cons of treating the soil with lime or biosolids.
Biosolids are human waste products that have been treated with additional chemicals that enrich the soil. Lime neutralizes the acidic levels of the soil.
The authority is looking to maintain and amend the soil, said airport manager Ed Wallis.
Wallis said biosolids were originally used on the soil to great result. Whereas 390 acres of airport property was once barren of grass all but 380 acres now are. The property amasses 550 acres.
Prince William authority member Desi Arnaiz raised the question of marketing the airport. Whereas other members of the authority feel the airport is a victim of a bad economy, Arnaiz said he feels that it should not hinder their efforts to successfully market it.
"I refuse to be a victim," he said. "We need to look beyond that."
The airport has not rented out the corporate space authority members would like to. Arnaiz suggested that the authority look at other directions they might take, such as making it a major aviation facility.
He indicated that the airport had great potential and cited the location of the airport as one of its greatest assets.
In other news, Wallis reported on ongoing preparation for the Force Protection Equipment Demonstration Exposition VIII, scheduled for May 17-19.
Wallis also said plans are still afoot to bring an airshow to the airport. Wallis is in the process of finding funding in the private sector to make it happen.
