STAFFORD — Members of the Stafford Regional Airport Authority held a lively conversation on planning hangars at its meeting Tuesday.
The discussion centered on two buildings. The first is a storage facility for maintenance equipment. Airport manager Ed Wallis states that about 1,800 square feet is needed to house the equipment. At present, much of the equipment is kept outside in the elements.
Funding needs to be secured, Wallis said.
That and design of the building fueled the discussion.
Should electricity and water be run to the building? What type of materials would serve best?
A possibility of a "membrane" structure, or plastic bubble has been tossed around, according to discussion. It would be a cost-effective solution, but would be good for only 20 years. It would not allow for expansion, either, board members said.
A 5,000 square feet hangar was also discussed. The hangar could conceivably house a hangar, a school and offices.
No decisions were made regarding such a plans. They will be discussed again next month.
Plans are still underway to for an air show in October. The event will be free to the public and will include professional performers. Aerial stunts are planned for part of the show.
Sponsors are needed for the show, Wallis said.
