STAFFORD — Col. Dan Choike, commander of Marine Corps Base Quantico, on Tuesday proposed a joint land use study between the Corps and adjacent localities including Stafford.
The Marine Corps is interested in how the localities will continue to grow and how it will affect the Marine Corps base, according to Choike.
Most military organizations were originally located in remote areas, according to Choike’s report. However, over time installations drew people and businesses closer to take advantage of civilian job opportunities, to provide goods and services and more. Urban growth and development increased, but so did conflicts between base operations and civilian development, historically.
Conflicts can include but aren’t limited to noise during training that affects area residents, as well as growth that could possibly interfere with the base’s day-to-day operations, including aircraft landing or taking off, according to the report.
Overall residential and commercial growth is a concern, according to Choike.
Board members are currently considering whether or not to participate in the land-use study, to be paid for mostly by the federal government. There was no vote on the matter Tuesday.
If it participated, Stafford would be responsible for a small portion of the cost of the study.
