STAFFORD —The Stafford County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday announced a budget surplus of $6.6 million.
According to the board, the county’s sheriff’s office and fire-rescue department have increased staffing to improve response times. Schools have received millions of dollars in additional funds and, for two years in a row, Stafford County teachers are receiving raises.
Infrastructure improvements are being made in schools, roads, and parks and recreation, the board noted.
Realizing the economy is still on a downturn, the board noted potential uses for the surplus including reducing outstanding debt obligations, increasing financial reserves, accelerating infrastructure projects such as the rebuilding of Anne Moncure Elementary and construction of fire station 14 on Shelton Shop Road, as well as the addition of parkland as approved by the voters in the recent parks bond referendum.
The board believes that economic development plays a vital role in Stafford’s overall success.
Stafford County Public Schools also reports a $3.2 million year-end surplus, according to the board of supervisors.
