One year ago an assassin attacked a political event in Tucson. He killed six and wounded others, including Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. The Arizona congresswoman's recovery has inspired the nation.
Her struggle has conveyed courage and grace. Millions have kept her in their thoughts and prayers. On Tuesday, Giffords resigned her seat to allow her district to be represented by someone not enduring the rigors of therapy. She put Arizona first.
Prior to her travails, Giffords enjoyed a reputation for her pleasant demeanor. She neither made enemies nor demonized the opposition. She reportedly described herself as a former Republican; she counted herself among the Blue Dog Democrats — i.e., party members who embraced the center.
During the State of the Union message, she sat between Arizona congressional colleagues — one a Democrat, the other a Republican. President Obama gave her a hug. Americans everywhere share affection for a wonderful woman.—The Richmond Times-Dispatch
