STAFFORD— Local philanthropist Doris Buffett, also known at the “Sunshine Lady,” will be honored in Roanoke on April 20 at an annual media conference banquet.
The Virginia Press Association/Associated Press Advertising and News Conference will be held at the Hotel Roanoke, where Buffett, 69, will be honored.
Doris Buffett is the sister of the wildly successful investor and philanthropist Warren Buffett, and tells her story in the book, "Giving It All Away: The Doris Buffett Story," by Michael Zitz.
"Doris has always had enormous empathy for the person who has really gotten a short straw in life," Warren Buffett told Zitz. "I think that if our father was alive today, he'd be prouder of Doris than of me."
Doris Buffett created the Sunshine Lady Foundation in 1996, and has been dedicated to giving her inherited money away to worthy causes and people close to her heart. Since that time, the foundation has awarded more than $100 million in grants.
The foundation’s mission is to invest in the advancement of education, well-being and new life choices for disadvantaged people. Buffett has a special empathy for the working poor and families in crisis, according to the foundation.
