BEREA -- On Friday morning July 23, a large sinkhole opened in Berea. Measuring approximately 10 feet in all directions, the hole was precariously close to a turn lane on Rt. 17 Warrenton Rd.
The sinkhole opened up on the southeast corner of the intersection of Stafford Lakes Parkway and Warrenton Road.
One edge of the sinkhole was within three feet of the edge of the turn lane from Stafford Lakes Parkway onto Warrenton Road. southbound.
Virginia Department of Transportation crews responded to the sinkhole shortly after it was reported and made a temporary repair.
According to VDOT spokeswoman Tiny Bundy, the sinkhole developed due to a drainage pipe failure. Although the pipe runs under Warrenton Road, VDOT reported that the road was not compromised.
VDOT crews repaired the pipe and filed in the hole. The impacted area is cordoned off with barrels for safety. The site will be monitored on an ongoing basis before the repairs are made final.
The sinkhole had been reported by a citizen that observed it when they turned onto Warrenton Rd. Bundy said, "VDOT can't be everywhere so we appreciate people reporting road hazards."
VDOT has established a toll free number for citizens to call and report road hazards. It is an automated system and can be reached at 800-367-7623.
