Ben Stein visits UMW
FREDERICKSBURG — Ben Stein, a columnist, humorist, television and movie actor, author, lawyer and university teacher, visited The University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg on Oct. 20, speaking as a guest in the Fredericksburg Forum.
Stein spoke about the economic crisis and how to survive it. The event was held in Dodd Auditorium.
He is most famous for his 1986 role in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” and for his TV show, “Win Ben Stein’s Money.” He attended Columbia University and Yale Law School, and has taught at American University, the University of California and Pepperdine University.
Jett elected president of association
STAFFORD — Stafford County Sheriff Charles Jett has been elected president of the Virginia Sheriff’s Association. Jett assumed the position at an annual conference held in Norfolk in late September attended by more than 350 law enforcement personnel and guests.
“Since 1633 sheriffs in the Commonwealth of Virginia have had an ethical obligation to protect the citizens they are fortunate to serve,” said Jett in a released statement. “I look forward to working with the VSA and my fellow sheriffs as we work together to ensure safe communities throughout the State of Virginia.”
Seasonal flu drive held at airport
STAFFORD — A seasonal flu drive was held late last week at Stafford Regional Airport.
The event took place Oct. 23, and the Virginia Department of Health had 3,000 vaccinations prepared for the day, according to county Public Information Manager Cathy Riddle.
Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge will offer free seasonal flu vaccinations to people 60 years age and older. The next date is Oct. 30 from 9 a.m. to noon at Fellowship House, 12800 Harbour Drive in Woodbridge.
Group meeting’s program announced
FREDERICKSBURG — The regular monthly meeting of the Mary Washington Branch Preservation Virginia will be held Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. in the theater of the Central Rappahannock Regional Library on Caroline Street. The program will be “Civil War Fredericksburg: Then and Now,“ by Scott Walker.
