When Stafford Regional Airport opened in 2001 it was hailed as a new economic tool to attract new businesses to the area. Eight years later the airport is still making good on its mission by providing businesses decision makers provide convenient access to the National Capital Region, by avoiding busier airports like Washington National or Dulles. The airport is a 550-acre parcel of land located off of Interstate 95. It lies about 40 miles south of Washington, D.C. and 65 miles north of Richmond. Managed by Airport Manager Ed Wallis, the airport is located at 75 Aviation Way. The airport’s 5,000-foot runway can support a variety of corporate jets to small recreational planes. The facility is governed by a seven-member board comprised of appointed representatives from the City of Fredericksburg, Stafford and Prince William counties. Currently the representatives include Thurman “T” Campbell, Desi Arnaiz, Mike Wood, Vernon Torney, Walt George John Garvin and Hank Scharpnenberg. The airport was a long-envisioned project for the county, with its conceptual roots dating back to 1989. Today the airport is still expanding, adding new hangars to store aircraft, serving as a home for a local medial air transport and holding local festivals on its grounds to attract the public. The airport is staffed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. but planes can take off from the airport 24 hours a day.
