Neville: A peek at football, field hockey in action
For the Stafford County Sun

The high school football career for Brooke Point High School senior Chase Barnett ended last Friday night at Massaponax High School.
The Black-Hawks leading rusher suffered a dislocated ankle and a broken fibula in the third quarter of their narrow 36-35 win. Prior to his injury Barnett rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns. This certainly hurts Brooke Point’s drive for a state championship but the Black-Hawks are still a dangerous team. I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing Chase several times and he’s a great kid. I wish him well in his recovery.
Colonial Forge High School continues to lead the Commonwealth District standings. The Eagles have ripped off five straight wins, including four in row in district competition. I wrote last week that the upcoming Commonwealth District field hockey tournament should be one of the most exciting in recent memory. The district will send three teams to the Northwest Region playoffs but at least one good team is going to be left out.
Mountain View High School does not have to worry about the tournament because as regular season champs it has already qualified for the playoffs.
Stafford High School, which advanced to the state championship game last season, is the fourth seed in this year’s tournament. If you’re a Stafford fan you shouldn’t be to worried. Last season the Indians were the third seed and ended up advancing to the playoffs and the state tournament.
Stafford’s first round opponent is fifth seeded Brooke Point. The Black-Hawks have been very competitive this season. North Stafford High School is the second seed with Riverbend High School as the third seed. The tournament final is slated for Oct. 30 at the higher seed.
