STAFFORD — Four Brooke Point High School field hockey players signed letters of intent on Feb. 6 to play at their colleges of choice.

STAFFORD — While some may dream of making it big by being scoped out by a big-name college, North Stafford High School senior Reynaldo Radlin, ran quite literally headfirst toward the opportunity.

STAFFORD — Four Stafford County high school gymnastics teams competed Jan. 10 at the Glory Days Grill/Park View High School invitational gymnastics meet.

Jackson Brown had a hit song a few years ago entitled “Runnin On Empty”. I don’t know if Mountain View High School senior Thomas Porter was running on empty last Saturday when he competed at the Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego.

Well it’s time to move indoors for sports as the winter sports season takes shape but before we delve into the winter sports scene I wanted to recap a very fine fall season for area schools.

STAFFORD — Meghan Smith of Mountain View High School has reportedly signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Appalachian State University (ASU).

The fall sports season officially ended for Stafford County teams last week. On Nov. 14, Brooke Point High School’s football team, which has qualified for the Northwest Region playoffs the past four seasons, dropped a narrow 27-21 decision to GW-Danville.

High school football playoffs begin on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Brooke Point High School, which won the Commonwealth District title, hosts G.W. Danville in the first round. The Black-Hawks roll into the post-season with a four-game winning streak.

I have lots of kudos to give out this week. (I like that word kudos by the way.)

OK, I’ll be the first to admit it. I am not a runner! I’ll run if I have a ball in my hand or trying to get a hit in baseball or softball but as far as just running, I’m sorry it’s not my cup of tea. 

The high school football career for Brooke Point High School senior Chase Barnett ended last Friday night at Massaponax High School.

Well, the first big upset of the high school football season took place last Friday night.

I always enjoy it when an athlete gets a chance to play in college. Erin West, a North Stafford High School graduate who is in her senior year at Longwood College, is the Lancers starting goalkeeper on the field hockey team.

Parity, that’s the word I would use to describe this season’s field hockey race in the Commonwealth district.

Well, summer is over and it’s back to school. I hope you had a great summer.

Coaches association selects All State teams.

The high school sports season came to an end Saturday. The Colonial Forge High School baseball team advanced to the Group AAA state tournament for the third time in school history.

STAFFORD — Amanda Babineau says the sport of field hockey was a great way to experience new and fun things. She didn’t know those experiences would allow her to play field hockey for college.

STAFFORD —  The college career for Staffords Marshall Thomason did not begin well for his team, as Mt. St. Mary’s lost its first 15 games of the season.

The outdoor high school track and field season ended Saturday with the group AAA state meet at Todd stadium in Newport News.

Well, the first round of the Northwest Region playoffs was good for a number of Stafford county teams.

They say hitting is contagious in baseball.

The North Stafford High School softball team has wrapped up its third straight Commonwealth District regular season title and qualified for the upcoming Northwest Region playoffs.

The Mountain View High School boys’ tennis team has qualified for the Northwest Region tournament for the second straight year.

North Stafford High School tennis standouts Kyle Boes, 18, and Jake Rasmussen, 17, have taken their team 7-7 this season, with a final regular-season win over Massaponax. The team went on to play its first playoff game at home against Brooke Point High School.

STAFFORD — After her son had won the first point of his doubles match against Stafford High School on Tuesday, a proud Lydia Ackermann clapped and hollered, “Good job, guys.”

The Penn Relays track and field competition is one of the biggest track and field events in the country.

The Stafford County Sun’s feature, “Five Questions,” paid a visit to Mountain View High School this week, and focused on two of the school’s standout soccer players.

It looks like the race for the top spot in the Commonwealth District baseball standings is going to be almost as wild as the boys’ basketball race was in the winter.

For a softball team that recently felt the loss of a fellow bright athlete, these two standouts have maintained a sense of focus, camaraderie and humor.
