Colonial Forge at Riverbend
Friday 10/30 at 7:30 p.m.
Sole possession of first place, and potentially the championship in the Commonwealth District is on the line. And for Colonial Forge High School, they couldn’t be going into the critical match-up any hotter. The Eagles have won six in a row. There most recent win resulted in a near 500-yard output on offense against Brooke Point High School, and assured that the two-time defending league champions would not make it a three-peat. Quarterback Blake Frohnapfel went 7-for-10 passing for four touchdowns and 232 yards. His twin brother, Eric, was on the receiving end of three scoring tosses. He finished with 119 yards on four catches. Riverbend, on the other hand, is coming off a 45-35 setback against Massaponax — giving the Bears their first loss of the season. How they respond to that defeat will be vitally important.
North Stafford at Massaponax
Friday 10/30 at 7:30 p.m.
Massaponax High School, winners of four in a row, is squarely in the fight for the Commonwealth crown. North Stafford High School is just on the outside looking in. The Panthers came through with a huge road victory last Friday over Riverbend, thanks in part to a solid rushing attack that gained 441 yards. They made their mark right away, scoring just 53 seconds into the contest. The Wolverines are one game back of the trio at the top, keeping pace with a 44-19 victory against Mountain View. They are likely to run the ball as well, with a variety of players toting the rock. Torry Hart had 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 23 carries last Friday. He opened with a 20-yard run to the end zone in the first quarter. Quarterback Marcus Morrast added 103 more yards and one more score. It came in the third period and gave his club a commanding 24-7 advantage.
World Series: New York Yankees vs. Philadelphia Phillies
Started on Wednesday 10/28
They’ll be no shortage of offense in this year’s edition of the Fall Classic. Both the Yankees and Phillies have power bats and hitter-friendly ballparks. For the pinstripes, which finished with the league’s top record, they don’t have an easy out in the lineup. Derek Jeter is a fantastic postseason performer, while Alex Rodriguez is becoming one overnight. New York is the favorites, despite going up against the team that currently holds the title of “World Champion.” The Phillies celebrated their first title since 1980 with a five-game triumph over Tampa Bay. This year, they’re trying to become the first National League club since 1976 to go back-to-back. The best news for Philadelphia is that its best hitters — Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins — are all swinging well.
