Bowl games offer holiday entertainment
STAFFORD — The next two weeks are mostly about college football. More specifically, the bowl games. Most are meaningless, but some providing intriguing match-ups. Below are several must-see games, as well as contests with local interest.

I personally don’t care for ABC and ESPN’s coverage of the NBA (preference to the old days with NBC). However, the Disney networks are given praise for quantity, rather than quality.

Games’ survivors move ahead
STAFFORD — Two local state football semifinals were both set to take place on Saturday. Weather — namely snow — changed all that. One got moved to Sunday, on a muddy field. The other was pushed back to Monday night. Both were nip-and-tuck and decided by a three-point margin. Two survived to move on to Charlottesville and their respective state championship contests.

Due to the rain, Commonwealth Soccer League postponed its fall 2009 division finals on Sunday, Nov. 15 at Loriella Park in Spotsylvania County.

STAFFORD — Stripped of his play-calling abilities, Redskins Head Coach Zorn suffered another loss with Washington on Monday, losing to the Philadelphia Eagles 27-17.

The Black-Hawks couldn’t hold off the feisty Riverbend Bears, thus falling farther behind in their quest for a third consecutive Commonwealth District crown. One positive that can be taken is the way the offense played.
Field hockey team works ‘for every game’
The Mountain View High School field hockey team started the 2009 season on the wrong side of the scoreboard — twice.
Losses on the road to Maury and Cox may discourage a team that sees its record at 0-2 and is coming off a Northwest Regional title in 2008.
However, they weren’t the result of poor efforts.

With his team knelt down in front of the far end zone breathing heavily, Woodbridge senior wide receiver Darius Smith walked back and forth in front of his teammates vehemently saying “that’s heart right there, that’s all heart right there.“
