The fall sports season officially ended for Stafford County teams last week. On Nov. 14, Brooke Point High School’s football team, which has qualified for the Northwest Region playoffs the past four seasons, dropped a narrow 27-21 decision to GW-Danville.
Danville senior David Wilson, who will play college football at Virginia Tech next fall, went 67 yards with a pass for the winning touchdown with less than two minutes left in the game. Wilson’s score came less than a minute after Brooke Point senior Larry Lowe had given the Black-Hawks a 21-20 lead with a 63-yard touchdown reception from senior quarterback Brian Hudson. It was Lowe’s second touchdown catch of the night for Brooke Point.
Hudson threw for 248 yards and Gershon Reed, filling in once again Chase Barnett who was injured a month ago, rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown. Brooke Point finishes with a 9-2 record and will lose 13 seniors to graduation.
The field hockey season for both Mountain View and North Stafford high schools ended Nov. 13 in Virginia Beach in the quarterfinals of the Group AAA state tournament. The Wildcats fell to Princess Anne High School 1-0 in absolutely horrible conditions. A steady rain finally halted the game with a little over three minutes left in the first half. Play resumed about 30 minutes later but Mountain View was unable to get the tying goal. The Wildcats, which won the Commonwealth District and Northwest Region titles, lose seven seniors.
North Stafford fell to eventual state champ Frank Cox High School 3-0 in a quarterfinal contest. North Stafford, like Mountain View, had to play in terrible conditions. The Wolverines’ defense, led by senior goalkeeper Ashley Scroggin was able to contain Cox’s high powered offense for much of the first half but yielded a goal with less than two minutes left in the first half to fall behind 1-0. Cox continued to put the Wolverines’ defense on their heels and scored two more goals after halftime. North Stafford will lose 12 seniors.
So now our attention shifts to indoor sports. Can Colonial Forge High School’s wrestling team defend its Group AAA state title? Can Mountain View’s boys’ basketball team make another deep run in the Group AAA state playoffs, (they lost in the quarterfinal round last season) and can the North Stafford girls’ basketball team qualify for the Northwest Region playoffs for a second straight season? These are plenty of questions that will be answered in due time.
