Neville: Mountain View claims win in first upset of football season

» 0 Comments | Post a Comment

Well, the first big upset of the high school football season took place last Friday night. Mountain View High School pulled itself into the Commonwealth District race with a 26-17 win at Brooke Point High School.

Conor Black scored three touchdowns as the Wildcats dealt Brooke Point its first loss of the season. Shane Black tossed a touchdown pass to Anthony Johnson for the Wildcats other score. Despite the loss Brooke Point senior Chase Barnett had another outstanding effort, rushing for 212 yards and a pair of scores.

Brooke Point’s loss opened the door for Colonial Forge High School to jump into first place in the district standings. The Eagles downed Stafford 24-14 for their fourth straight win. Sophomore quarterback Tim Scott, in just his second start replacing the injured Blake Frohnapfel, scored two touchdowns for Colonial Forge.

Coach Bill Brown has a young squad and he thinks one of the reasons the Eagles are having success is the offensive line, with just one senior, is starting to play with a great deal of confidence. The Eagles are 3-0 in the district while Brooke Point, Mountain View and Massaponax high schools are one game back.

Congratulations to the Mountain View field hockey team. They are Commonwealth District regular season champs for the second straight year. The Wildcats lost seven players to graduation but Alexis Gay, Heather Hartman and Rachel Whitt have been a core group that has helped Mountain View repeat as district champs.

Mountain View has wrapped up a berth in the upcoming Northwest Region playoffs. Last season the Wildcats advanced to the Group AAA state semifinals.

The upcoming district tournament should be very entertaining with Stafford, North Stafford and Riverbend high schools all vying for a playoff spot with Brooke Point, which has been very competitive all season, also thinking it has a chance to get to the tournament final.
