Parity, that’s the word I would use to describe this season’s field hockey race in the Commonwealth district. Mountain View and Stafford high schools, two teams that advanced to the Group AAA state tournament, should be the favorites again this season.
However in the early stages of the season we are not seeing the 5-0, 6-0 scores like we saw last season. The most improved team has to be Brooke Point High School. The Black-Hawks upended Colonial Forge High School in overtime on a goal from Stephanie Cox. The school also went into overtime with Riverbend High School before falling 2-1.
Brooke Point blanked Woodbridge on Monday for its latest win. Rebecca Patterson led the Black-Hawks with two goals and two assists. I think North Stafford High School is a program that is always very competitive.
In volleyball, Colonial Forge and Albemarle High School once again seem to be the top two teams. Colonial Forge has won five Commonwealth District regular season titles and has advanced to the state tournament the past few seasons.
Senior Sara Frohnapfel leads the Eagles, who are closing in on the VHSL’s all-time assist mark. Senior Ashley Hutchison, junior Heather Quick and sophomores Brooke Kelley and Catie Platt are also contributing to the Eagles’ success so far this season.
Brooke Point’s volleyball team topped Freedom 3-0 on Monday night. Margie Kennedy had five kills for the Black-Hawks. Megan Helwig chipped in with 13 assists and five aces.
