Washington Nationals vs. Milwaukee Brewers
Friday 8/21 – Monday 8/24
After going .500 on a road trip, the Nationals are on the verge of creeping out of baseball’s cellar. With 43 wins as of Monday, Washington is just a few games behind the Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates for the worst record in the majors. And while that doesn’t seem like an accomplishment to go crazy over, but for most of the season, it was hard to imagine this team getting much over 50 victories. This just shows the improvement that’s been made in D.C. over the second half of the year. Going in the opposite direction is Milwaukee. A team that was competing for the NL Central divisional lead as late as June is now far behind. Two offensive sluggers to keep an eye on are first baseman Prince Fielder and left fielder Ryan Braun.
Washington Redskins vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
Saturday 8/22 at 7:30 p.m.
In the second preseason contest for both teams, the Redskins host the defending Super Bowl champs at FedEx Field. If Washington’s offense can muster up any points on Saturday, it’ll top what they accomplished in its preseason opener. Minus running back Clinton Portis, wide out Santana Moss and offensive lineman Randy Thomas, the Redskins could only muster 197 yards with two turnovers. Quarterback Jason Campbell completed 3-of-6 passes for 38 yards. The defense, meanwhile, gave up 500 total yards. Pittsburgh, in its opener against Arizona, saw most of the scoring coming from the reserves. The Steelers beat the Cardinals at Heinz Field on Aug. 13.
NASCAR Sprint Cup at Bristol, Tenn.
Saturday 8/22 at 7:30 p.m.
Most who attend the night race at the Bristol Motor Speedway claim their tickets years in advance. That’s because it’s a half-mile course that’s renowned for bumping and wrecking. That excitement is ratcheted up more considering the cutoff for the 10-race “playoff.” As usual, twelve drivers will eventually compete for the Sprint Cup championship. And although several spots have been sealed up with three races left before the postseason, there are many on the bubble. On the outside looking in is 13th place Brian Vickers, last Sunday’s winner at Michigan. Clint Bowyer and Kyle Busch are also in the mix. Just ahead of them include a bunch at tenth though 12th: Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth, and Mark Martin.
D.C. United vs. Los Angeles Galaxy
Saturday 8/22 at 7:30 p.m.
Perhaps no soccer player in the world is more renowned than David Beckham. And on Saturday night at RFK Stadium, he will certainly be the center of attention when his Los Angeles Galaxy face-off against the United. Lately he’s been the headline for all the wrong reasons. The negative chain of events started when teammate Landon Donovan ripped Beckham in his new book, calling him lazy and selfish. Beckham then confronted home fans during a game. And on Saturday night, he received a red card and subsequent ejection. As far as the teams are concerned, D.C. is fourth in the Eastern Conference while L.A. sits third in the West.
