League play resumes following player's death

STAFFORD — The Spotsylvania Little League has resumed playing following the death of one of its players.

On June 12, more than a week after player Chelal Matos was fatally struck by lighting in Spotsylvania, the league resumed playing its games.

The 12-year-old Spotsylvania boy was playing catch with his friend when he was struck by lightning and killed. He died at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg.

A second boy — an 11-year-old — has been struggling to recover after reportedly receiving a charge from the lighting as well, through Chelal.

A memorial trust has been set up by SCLL for Chelal titled, The Chelal Beninu Gross-Matos Memorial Fund, and established at Wachovia Bank. Anyone wishing to contribute to this fund for the family can do so at any Wachovia Bank branch.

Expressions of sympathy for the Spotsylvania Little League players may be sent to P.O. Box 969, Spotsylvania, VA 22553 or to prayersforplayers@spotsyll.org.
