WOODBRIDGE — Dave Moon had the race of his career Saturday night at Old Dominion Speedway in the Memorial Day 150. The Stafford driver, known for helping others to victory lane with his mechanical know-how, helped himself to his first career Late Model victory.
"This is my first win and, hopefully, the first of more to come," Moon said. "I’ve been close several times but never could get it until now."
Moon started fourth and moved up to second about halfway through the race, while Robert Bruce led. Moon took over the lead when Bruce looped his car in the backstretch in lap 108 and kept a sure-handed grip on the lead until the checkers.
As the race ended, there was widespread celebration in the crowd and in victory lane for the popular driver and mentor to younger drivers.
Adam Brenner, who started fifth and ran in third for much of the race, came in second behind Moon. Brenner’s only other race this season was a victory April 25. He finished second in points in 2008.
Doug Liberman collected his third top five in four races with a third-place finish. Liberman started third and got up to second at one point before being passed by Moon and Brenner.
Willard Lawrence finished fourth, his first finish outside of the top two this season.
After the spin, Bruce came back and passed Jason Shultz in lap 136 and took fifth. It was Bruce’s first top five of the season.
