Washington Nationals at Los Angeles Dodgers
Friday 8/6 – Sunday 8/8
Most teams find their most trouble when they play a road trip on the opposite coast. The Nationals, though have come into this stretch of seven games with plenty of momentum. Washington took their previous two home series from the Phillies and Braves – the two teams that top the National League East. The final three games of D.C.’s road swing come in Los Angeles. The Dodgers, in need of a final push to get past the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres in the NL West, got left-handed pitcher Ted Lilly and infielder Ryan Theriot from the Chicago Cubs at the trade deadline on Saturday.
NASCAR at Watkins Glen
Sunday 8/8 at 1 p.m. on ESPN
For all the left turns NASCAR drivers make during the course of a grueling season, there are two events in which both left and right turns come into play. One locale is the Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California – a race held in June. The other is in upstate New York at Watkins Glen. That’s where the Sprint Cup Series will be this weekend, as Greg Biffle looks to make it two in a row following his win at Pocono. Jeff Gordon hasn’t won in over a year, but has the most road course victories of all-time. Other road course masters include Tony Stewart and Juan Pablo Montoya.
Legg Mason Tennis Classic
Ends Sunday 8/8
One of several events leading up the U.S. Open next month, this annual event in Northwest D.C. at the Fitzgerald Tennis Center plays host to notable names such as Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt. Roddick lost out in the singles finals last year to Juan Martin Del Potro. Quarterfinal action takes place on Friday, with the semis on Saturday and the final event on Sunday. The event began in July 1969 and has become one of the top 20 men’s tennis tournaments in the world.
Dallas Cowboys vs. Cincinnati Bengals
Sunday 8/8 at 8 p.m. on NBC
The circus has begun in Cincinnati, with the two ringleaders being the outspoken Chad Ochocinco along with his friend, fellow wideout and fellow reality show partner – the newly acquired Terrell Owens. Quarterback Carson Palmer and the Bengals are seeking an improvement on their playoff appearance in 2009. Eying to reach the Super Bowl in its home stadium are the Dallas Cowboys, Owens’ former team. But the early road has been rocky so far for the defending NFC East champs, with rookie receiver Dez Bryant refusing to take part in the first-year player ritual of carrying another player’s pads and then going down with a leg injury. The Cowboys and Bengals will play 2010’s opening exhibition game in Canton, Ohio, the site of the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony one day prior.
