SHS Indians claim victories
Stafford High School has been seeing double lately. The Indians' boys' and girls' basketball teams claimed victory in their respective Commonwealth District tournaments. Now, both – along with other local clubs – move on to compete at the Northwest Regional tournament. And for the boys, they are fortunate enough to have some home cooking – as all games will be played inside their gym. Below is the rest of the Northwest tourney, which began on Thursday evening.
Boys' Basketball
G.W.-Danville at Stafford
Albemarle at Patrick Henry
Osbourn at Potomac
Gar-Field at Battlefield
By virtue of its strong regular season record, especially inside the Commonwealth, the Indians have the home-court advantage throughout. The only team in this field that they’ve played is Albemarle – on two occasions. The first time went to Stafford by a score of 41-38 on Jan. 5. More recently, on Feb. 4, the tables were turned in a 60-53 setback. The Indians will look to leading scorers Jamal Wilson and Damean Turner.
Girls’ Basketball
Osbourn at Mountain View
Stafford at Stonewall Jackson
Halifax County at Forest Park
Osbourn Park at W. Fleming
A 12-game win streak was the key for the Stafford girls’ team to get to this point. One of their losses, however, came at the hands of Mountain View – a team they could see later on in the tournament. The Wildcats were triumphant, 48-47, on Jan. 29. The other meeting, less than two weeks earlier, was just as close. Stafford eeked out a 45-43 win.
