Colonial Forge quarterback Blake Frohnapfel didn’t waste any time getting ready for 2010. Just two weeks ago his team fell in the opening round of the playoffs in a 37-35 decision against Franklin County, and the Eagle signal-caller is already in off-season conditioning drills. But not only is the next season of high school football on his mind, his next destination is as well. Several colleges, including Division I programs, have shown interest in the soon-to-be senior. And with good reason. Frohnapfel was the 2009 Commonwealth District Offensive Player of the Year and second team all-region member. He completed 76 of 138 passes for 1,609 yards and 17 touchdowns as well as scoring six touchdowns on the ground.
Q: How would you judge this past season based on your initial expectations?
A: Coming in to the season, we expected to compete for the state championship. I thought we played at that level for most of the regular season. So, losing in the first round was kind of a shock. The playoffs are really a whole different game.
Q: Right now, what does this team look like for 2010?
A: We’re getting most of our skill players back. That’s really key, because I think we have one of the best skill player corps in the entire state. We’re losing four good offensive linemen, but I feel like we can find some good talent to take over those spots.
Q: What new roles do you have as a senior member of the team?
A: As a senior, you need to be a leader and be a guy that others can look up to. Being on the varsity team for all four years, I’ve pretty much seen it all. I think it’s up to us and the rest of the seniors to relay that experience to the younger players.
Q: What’s the recruiting process for you been like?
A: I’ve been in contact with several schools from the Virginia and North Carolina area. I visited Duke, Virginia, West Virginia and enjoyed all of them. I’m hopeful that I get an offer soon, but I know it’s a process. I feel that once that offer comes through, it’ll be more of a relief than anything.
Q: With a 4.0 GPA, how important is academics in your choice of school?
A: I definitely want to go to a place that fits my academic needs. There’s a good chance I won’t be in the pros, so I need to think about what I want to do after college. I’d like to go into a school that I could get into just for my grades. I’d also like to study medicine, so hopefully I can find a place with a good medical program and get my degree there.
